Last week, Social Media Victims Law Center (SMVLC) founding attorney Matthew P. Bergman visited London for a series of high-profile meetings to discuss his recent submission to the UK government’s consultation, Growing Up in the Online World: A National Consultation. The consultation takes submissions from members of the public and industry to inform government policy, meaning the UK government will benefit directly from Matt’s experience litigating against social media companies and his understanding of how they operate internally.
During his visit, Bergman engaged with stakeholders across the UK government, media and academia. This included a direct engagement with the UK Prime Minister’s Technology advisor and Education and Skills advisor No. 10 Downing Street.
While in London, Bergman engaged with the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), to share his expertise on what measures the UK government could take to limit the damage of social media on children. Bergman also joined LBC’s Tom Swarbrick, for an interview on online safety, the government’s consultation, and his takeaways from working directly with bereaved families, with SMVLC.
Bergman also led a roundtable at the London School of Economics (LSE), hosted by the Digital Futures for Children Centre (DFC). This was a fantastic chance for academics and sector partners to hear about the work SMVLC and Bergman are doing to make social media companies accountable by bringing cases around product liability. This was a great chance for academics to hear what relevant new research they could pursue
