How Much Does It Cost to Hire a Social Media Addiction Lawyer at SMVLC?

Video Transcript

When we’re talking about SMVLC, it costs nothing — everything is contingency, which means that we don’t get paid unless we win. These are difficult cases because it’s new. It’s all new. We’re trying to make new law here, so we can never guarantee financial success, but we certainly will try.

And the important thing to keep in mind is this is about saving lives. It’s about products that are out there still to this day, even after being called out. These companies are so wealthy and so powerful and have so much influence with lobbying in DC that, to this day, they’re still harming kids.

So I always tell people, you know, we can’t guarantee what’s going to happen in court. I mean, we’re still fighting to make sure we get our day in court, and I believe that we will, but it’s a fight — and these companies fight everything.

What I can guarantee parents is that it makes a difference. So every parent that comes forward makes a difference. Every parent that speaks up. Every kid that is told about these harms. Every parent that asks questions and learns more.

You know, I’ll have parents calling all the time saying, “I just didn’t know what was going on. I was so desperate.” And then I saw a parent that was interviewed, and then I realized, “Oh my God, that’s what’s happening to my child.” And then I went and spoke with them, and now there’s a dialogue at least, right?

Every story that we come forward and tell makes a difference — not just with parents. I’ve had teens say to me, three years ago nobody was talking about this issue, and now they are. Now my teachers are talking about it, the kids are talking about it.

And what this one incredible young woman observed is she said, “You know, three years ago everyone had to struggle alone and we blamed ourselves. It always was like, what did we do wrong?”

And just that dialogue, just people coming forward, has given us space to talk. It’s given us space to admit when we need help. It’s given us space to feel like we can come forward without just being blamed.

And I think that’s critical for people to understand. So yes, litigation — our hope is that these companies will be held accountable. Unfortunately, all they understand is money, and so we want to hit them in the pocketbook.

But we also can’t predict what will happen in court. What we can say is it makes a difference, and we need as many people as possible to come forward.
