Social Media Victims Law Center has filed Snapchat lawsuits on behalf of families, including the family of Selena Rodriguez and Christopher J. “CJ” Dawley’s family. Our attorneys bring product liability experience to examining how the platform’s design and warnings may have contributed to a child’s injuries.

Snapchat Cases Our Firm Has Filed

Our firm has filed Snapchat lawsuits on behalf of families alleging that the platform contributed to serious harm. These examples describe the claims in individual cases and don’t establish Snap’s liability or the outcome of another family’s case.

J.F. v. Snap Inc.

Social Media Victims Law Center and Holland Law Firm announced a lawsuit on behalf of a Missouri family whose daughter was 12 when an adult contacted and groomed her through Snapchat. The family alleges that recommendation tools, account presentation, disappearing messages, and location features facilitated exploitation that led to sexual assault. The firm’s announcement identifies the Circuit Court of St. Charles County, Missouri.

Rodriguez v. Snap Inc.

Selena Rodriguez

Selena Rodriguez’s family alleges that her use of Snapchat and Instagram contributed to compulsive use, disrupted sleep, exploitation, and serious mental health injuries before her death. The complaint challenges the platforms’ design and the safeguards available to a young user.

Doffing vs. Snap Inc.

Doffing-v-Meta

Brittney Doffing brought claims involving her daughter, M.K., against Meta and Snap. The complaint alleges that the platforms contributed to compulsive use, sleep disruption, harmful adult contact, and an eating disorder. M.K.’s experience includes allegations of serious injury requiring treatment without a death.

Heffner vs. Snap Inc.

Heffner-vs-Meta

Ashleigh Heffner’s lawsuit concerns her son Liam Birchfield’s use of Snapchat and Instagram before his death. The family alleges that prolonged use, sleep disruption, and harmful interactions contributed to depression and other serious mental health injuries.

Dawley vs. Snap Inc.

Christopher James “CJ” Dawley’s family filed claims involving his use of Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat. The complaint alleges that platform use contributed to disrupted sleep and other harm before his death at age 17. His family’s case challenges the companies’ design choices and warnings.

“Snapchat’s design choices created the conditions that allowed a 25-year-old predator to find, groom, and sexually assault a 12-year-old child. This assault did not happen in a vacuum — it happened because Snapchat’s product design made it easy for a predator to reach and manipulate an unsuspecting child. Snap executives have long known that their features create a perfect environment for predators to exploit children, yet they have repeatedly failed to make the platform safe.”

Who May Be Eligible to File a Snapchat Lawsuit?

Your family can have a potential Snapchat claim if evidence supports a connection between the platform’s design or safety practices and serious harm to your child. Using Snapchat or encountering harmful content does not automatically establish a case against Snap Inc.

During a case evaluation, our attorneys may ask about:

  • Your child’s age and when they used Snapchat.
  • The injuries, treatment, and changes in your child’s wellbeing.
  • Relevant account activity, messages, recommendations, or interactions.
  • Other platforms or circumstances that may have contributed to the harm.
  • The dates and location that may affect the legal claim.

These are review factors, not a checklist every family must satisfy. Contact our team to discuss what happened, even if you have not collected every record.

“The root of the problem is that companies have decided that they would rather make billions of dollars than make safe products…They can make plenty of money designing a safe product, but they made a deliberate decision to do the bare minimum to keep their high profits, and that’s why we want to hold them accountable in a court of law,”

Bergman told 60 Minutes Australia in April 2022.

How Do You File a Snapchat Lawsuit?

If you are considering how to sue Snapchat over harm to your child, start by asking an attorney to review a potential claim against Snap Inc. The attorney can assess the evidence, identify the legal claims, and check the filing deadline.

  • Request a free case evaluation. Explain your child’s Snapchat use, what happened, and the harm you believe occurred.
  • Provide information for review. The legal team may request account details, medical records, messages, and a timeline to assess whether the evidence supports a claim.
  • Discuss representation. If the firm offers to take your case, review the representation agreement, attorney fees, and case expenses before signing.
  • Prepare and file the lawsuit. Once representation is agreed, your attorney prepares the complaint and explains the court and legal process that apply to your case.

Contact Social Media Victims Law Center today for a free Snapchat case evaluation. Sending an inquiry does not file a lawsuit or guarantee representation.

What Evidence Can Support a Snapchat Lawsuit?

Medical records, account information, and a timeline can help an attorney review a potential Snapchat lawsuit. Relevant information may include:

  • Usernames, account identifiers, dates of use, and available activity records.
  • Ordinary messages or screenshots lawfully available that show relevant interactions, dates, and context.
  • Medical, counseling, and treatment records.
  • Relevant school records and observations from family members.
  • Police reports, reporting confirmations, and records of threats or demands.
  • Bills and other records showing financial losses.

Ask our team how to preserve records before deleting an account, clearing messages, or resetting a device. Do not copy, download, or send sexual images of a minor through the contact form. Tell the legal team that such material exists and ask how to proceed with the appropriate authorities. You can request a case evaluation before gathering every record.

What Do Snapchat Lawsuits Allege?

Snapchat lawsuits allege that the platform’s design, warnings, or safeguards contributed to harm. Depending on the case, families may bring claims involving product liability, negligence, or other applicable laws.

The allegations concern:

  • Compulsive use and serious mental health injuries.
  • Contact with adults who allegedly groomed or sexually exploited children.
  • Sextortion, where someone threatens to share intimate images to demand money, additional images, or other actions.
  • Wrongful death and other physical injuries allegedly connected to platform use.

The firm’s Snapchat fentanyl lawsuits involve allegations that the platform’s features helped connect young users with drug sellers, contributing to fentanyl poisoning.

The legal claims and evidence differ between cases. A harmful experience on Snapchat does not, by itself, establish that Snap Inc. is liable.

Why are parents filing lawsuits against Snapchat on behalf of their children and teens?

At Social Media Victims Law Center, we have filed lawsuits against Snap Inc. on behalf of families across the country who allege that Snapchat is a defectively designed product. The lawsuits challenge features allegedly designed to encourage compulsive use among minors and expose them to foreseeable harm.

Our lawsuits include allegations involving:

  • Wrongful death: Families allege that Snapchat’s design contributed to their children’s deaths by suicide, sometimes alongside their use of other social media platforms.
  • Sexual assault, grooming, and exploitation: Claims allege that predators used Snapchat to identify, contact, and manipulate minors, sometimes leading to in-person assault.
  • Sextortion: Predators allegedly threatened to share intimate images to demand money, additional images, or other actions from children and teens.
  • Serious mental health injuries: Families allege that compulsive use contributed to depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and other conditions, including injuries requiring psychiatric hospitalization.
  • Drug sales and fentanyl deaths: Separate claims allege that Snapchat’s features helped connect minors with drug dealers and made those interactions harder to detect.
  • Gender discrimination: Some complaints allege that algorithms directed different and harmful content to users based on gender.
  • Failure to warn or concealment: Lawsuits allege that Snap failed to disclose known risks associated with its platform.

Schools and school districts have also brought separate claims seeking to recover costs associated with addressing students’ mental health needs.

Depending on the case, the legal claims may involve defective design, failure to warn, negligence, consumer protection laws, or other applicable statutes. Our position is that Snap should be held accountable where the evidence shows its product design or safety practices contributed to harm. Each claim must be supported by its own facts and evidence.

How Has Snapchat Affected Children and Teens’ Mental Health?

Families pursuing Snapchat mental health lawsuits allege that compulsive use and other platform features contributed to serious injuries. Depending on the case, the alleged harms include:

  • Depression or anxiety.
  • Eating disorders and body image concerns.
  • Sleep disruption associated with prolonged platform use.
  • Self-harm, suicidal thoughts, or suicide attempts.
  • Mental health conditions requiring treatment or hospitalization.

Mental health injuries can have several contributing factors. Our attorneys can review the timeline, treatment records, and platform use to assess whether the evidence supports a claim against Snap.

How Does Snapchat Place Children and Teens at Risk?

The lawsuits challenge how certain Snapchat features allegedly encouraged prolonged use or exposed minors to harmful interactions. The allegations relate to particular users, settings, and periods of use; current features may differ from those described in older complaints.

Algorithm-Driven, Never-Ending Feeds

Plaintiffs allege that content recommendations and repeated prompts encouraged children to return to Snapchat and remain on the app. Claims involving escalating harmful content need to be tied to the relevant complaint and evidence.

Variable Rewards Modeled on Slot Machines

The lawsuits compare unpredictable rewards and feedback with patterns that can encourage repeated use. Plaintiffs allege that these features contributed to compulsive behavior among minors. Any example involving trophies or achievements should identify the feature and period described in the relevant complaint.

Snapstreaks

Snapstreaks track consecutive days of exchanges between users. Families allege that pressure to maintain a streak contributed to compulsive use and disrupted routines.

Disappearing Messages

Some messages and Snaps are designed to disappear under the applicable settings. Plaintiffs allege that this made harmful interactions harder for families to identify. Disappearance does not guarantee that content cannot be saved or redistributed.

See If You Have a Case

If your child or teen was physically or mentally harmed as a result of their addiction to social media platforms, you may have legal options. We can help explain your rights.

Lack of Age and Identity Verification

Plaintiffs allege that inadequate age and identity checks allowed children to use the platform and adults to pose as younger users. These claims concern the checks and safeguards in place during the events described in each complaint.

Public-by-Default Profiles and Friend Recommendations

Some complaints allege that recommendations and misleading account presentation helped adults contact minors. The J.F. case challenges how these features allegedly connected a child with an adult who posed as a teenager. Allegations about profile visibility must be tied to the relevant account settings and period; they should not be read as a description of every teen account’s current defaults.

Location Sharing (Snap Maps)

Some claims challenge how location features were allegedly used to identify or contact children. Snapchat says Snap Map location sharing is off by default. Assessments of a particular claim must consider the settings and safeguards in place at the time.

No Parental Controls or Usage Notifications

Plaintiffs argue that the parental oversight tools available during the events described in their complaints were inadequate. Snapchat now offers Family Center, but whether those tools existed and worked at the time is a separate question that depends on each family’s case and the period involved.

Content-Neutral, Engagement-Maximizing Design

Plaintiffs allege that features designed to increase engagement exposed some minors to increasingly harmful interactions or material. The allegation concerns how the product operated for the users in each case; it does not establish that every recommendation or interaction caused harm.

Is the Snapchat Lawsuit a Class Action?

The Snapchat injury cases discussed on this page are not one nationwide class action. Some individual claims are coordinated with cases against other social media companies for parts of the court process. Each family’s claim still requires its own evidence.

Individual Injury Claims

Some social media injury cases involving Snap are part of the federal Social Media Adolescent Addiction/Personal Injury Products Liability Litigation, multidistrict litigation number 3047. Other claims may proceed in state court or a different proceeding. An attorney can explain the route that applies to your family.

School and Government Cases

School districts and government agencies have brought their own claims concerning alleged public costs, consumer protection, and child safety. Those cases do not automatically provide compensation to individual families.

Other Snapchat Class Actions

Searches for a Snapchat class action may refer to privacy or other disputes unrelated to personal injury. A claim form or settlement notice for another case does not file an injury claim against Snap. Check the named case and its official notice before treating it as relevant to your circumstances.

What Compensation May Be Available in a Snapchat Lawsuit?

A Snapchat lawsuit settlement or court award may compensate for losses connected to the alleged harm. The available damages depend on the evidence, the claim, and applicable law.

  • Medical and treatment expenses related to the injury.
  • Future care and income losses where recoverable.
  • Pain and suffering or other nonfinancial losses where the law permits.
  • Funeral and burial costs in an eligible death claim.
  • Losses suffered by eligible survivors, such as financial support or companionship, where recoverable.

Wrongful death and survival claims address different losses and may have different rules about who can file. There is no standard Snapchat lawsuit payout. Another case’s settlement does not determine your family’s claim value, and filing does not guarantee compensation.

How Long Do You Have to File a Snapchat Lawsuit?

The deadline to file a Snapchat lawsuit varies by state and claim type. Missing it could mean losing your right to seek compensation.

Your child’s age, the date of injury or death, and when the potential claim was discovered may affect the deadline. Being a minor does not automatically extend the filing period.

Frequently Asked Questions About Snapchat Lawsuits

Is the Snapchat lawsuit real?

Yes. Families have filed lawsuits against Snap Inc. alleging that aspects of Snapchat’s design or safeguards contributed to serious harm. There are several different cases rather than one lawsuit covering every Snapchat user. Filing a complaint does not establish liability or mean every user qualifies.

Can I sue Snapchat for emotional distress?

Emotional distress alone does not automatically establish a claim against Snap. An attorney needs to review the alleged injury, supporting records, and legal basis for holding the company responsible. You can request an evaluation to discuss what happened and any treatment your child received.

Is there one Snapchat lawsuit claim form for every case?

No. A settlement form applies to the case identified in its official notice. It is different from requesting a review of a potential injury claim. Contact Social Media Victims Law Center to discuss your child’s experience; sending the contact form does not file a lawsuit.

Does a Snapchat settlement mean my family will receive a payout?

No. A settlement in a privacy case, school lawsuit, or another family’s case does not automatically entitle your family to payment. Eligibility and compensation depend on the specific case, evidence, and applicable law. Read an official settlement notice carefully if you believe it concerns you.

Can I request a review if Snapchat messages have disappeared?

Yes. You can ask for a review even if some messages are unavailable. Tell the legal team what records remain, such as account details, ordinary screenshots, medical records, or police reports. Missing information may affect the assessment, but you do not need a complete file to make an inquiry.
