Attorney Laura Marquez-Garrett gave their presentation on social media’s impact on children’s mental health to the NOCO Moms Together Group at the First Presbyterian Church in Fort Collins, Colorado, on Monday, December 2nd.
They spoke with families and community members about all things social media, sharing what they had seen and learned over the past three years and offering tips for parents navigating these difficult issues.
About Laura Marquez-Garrett
Laura is a 2002 Harvard Law School graduate and spent the first twenty-years of their career in Big Law, overseeing complex litigation matters and specializing in electronic evidence and forensic investigation. In January of 2022, Laura left a predominantly defense-oriented practice to join the Social Media Victims Law Center (SMVLC) to contribute to the Center’s mission of change and holding social media companies accountable for the harms they are causing to children and families.
Laura has since filed more than 300 complaints against social media companies in state and federal courts across the country; has spoken out about social media harms to multiple major news organizations, on podcasts such as Your Undivided Attention and Scrolling 2 Death, at events like The Mothers Against Media Addiction Expert Insight Series, and panels, including the recent Aspen Ideas Festival. Laura also spoke at a House Energy & Commerce Committee Roundtable on the Dangers of Big Tech and the Fentanyl Poisoning Crisis; authored an Op-Ed in the Los Angeles Blade in support of the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA); and has met with hundreds of children and families, serves as a member of the Fairplay Board of Directors and Phone-Free Schools Movement’s Advisory Board, and is actively involved in efforts across the globe to force change and hold social media companies accountable for the harms they are causing children as a matter of intentional platform design.
